Passengers and Crew

A formal list of the names was never issued of the 108 people who died but part of this list was obtained from Peter Forrester who wrote a book, Wings over Somerset on the disaster and compiled a list of crash victims. We have listed all the names we have found with Peter’s information, newspapers and civil death records. Some had ages and the village they came from. We hope this information is correct but as a list wasn’t published it has been drawn from many sources.

If anyone has more information or would like to make a correction please get in touch with us: info@swissairdisaster.uk

A D.C.10 aircraft supplied by Sir Freddie Laker, flew back the survivors of the disaster to RAF Lyneham. Civilian and RAF ambulances took the injured to hospital, while coaches were laid on to return the other survivors to their homes.

On 17 April, a Vanguard airliner flew into Bristol airport containing the coffins of the 106 victims. From there deceased were transported to the RAF Locking, near Weston-super-Mare, and placed in the gymnasium. Throughout the day hearses arrived to collect the deceased and take them across Somerset.

Twenty people from Congresbury lost their lives in this disaster. Many are interred in St Andrew’s churchyard, in the old part of the Church Yard. A vigil was held in the church refectory over 4 days guarded by the Congresbury British Legion and overnight but the Yeo Trogs Venture Scout Group. Initially, a seventeenth-century sundial memorial was donated to the village to commemorate these villagers, but it was stolen two years later. Memorial Benches were installed in 2013 but again these have been vandalised.

In the recreation ground in the village of Wrington, behind Silver Street, a row of Lombardy poplar trees was planted in memory of each person who lost their life in the disaster. A plaque on the outer wall of the social club in the playing fields commemorates the people who lost their lives, but they are not named.

At Abridge, a service for sixteen victims was held, and thirteen were buried side by side. At Cheddar, a service for eleven victims was held. At Yatton, four women from the same family were buried. Eight victims were buried at Redhill, near Abridge. A Memorial for victims of the crash was built at Hochwald; Solothurn, Switzerland.
