Town Hall as memorial

Bristol Evening Post Tue Jan 7th 1975 – Faced with the urgent need for the restoration of their ancient town hall, hall, Axbridge Town Trustees found they had only about £400 in the kitty. Then came a dramatic intervention by the Mayor Clir. John Todd. He said the Trustees of the Hochwald Air Disaster Fund had just told him it was their unanimous wish that the Town Hall should be renovated as a memorial to the Axbridge people who had lost their lives.

Cilr. Todd said the fund had set aside £4,000 for the purpose, subject agreement of the Charity Commissioners. Chairman Doctor Norman Golledge reported that number of new residents in the town had also expressed a wish to contribute. It was agreed to fix a memorial plaque to the town hall wall. The Mayor added: “So many of those who died spent so many hours in this hall that I feel this scheme will provide a memorial appreciated by all.” Dr. Golledge said “I the Disaster Fund Trustees have hit upon the ideal gesture.” Because of inflation and rising costs the Town Trust agreed to call for estimates immediately.
